The Young Leader Scheme

Being a Young Leader is a specialised area of Explorer Scouting designed to allow Explorer Scouts to help a younger section within Scouting alongside adult Leaders.
This is designed to help the young person learn leadership skills that they will use in adult life whether in an employment setting or as an adult leader. It requires commitment and dedication but can also be very rewarding.

Young people can choose to be an Explorer Scout Young Leader on its own or can combine it with being a regular Explorer Scout. Young people from outside scouting can also be a Young Leader as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Volunteering but this is restricted to the period of time required for their Award Level and they are not classed as being in Scouting. Whichever Explorer Scouting route the young person chooses to take the activities of the various Explorer Scout Units within the District are open to them should they wish to take part, as Young Leaders are first and foremost Explorer Scouts and are encouraged to take part in the whole programme.

Being a Young Leader comes with a training requirement, but don’t worry its not that bad and is offered by the Explorer Scout Leader for Young Leaders which at the moment is one of the Doghouse Unit Leaders. The training is designed to be informative and fun and counts toward the adult training scheme should a young person go on to become an adult leader.
