About Scouting
The Scout Association provides adventurous activities and personal development opportunities for 400,000 young people aged 6-25. Internationally, we have over 28 million young people enjoying the benefits of Scouting across 216 countries. Personal development means promoting the physical, intellectual, social and spiritual well-being of the individual, helping them achieve their full potential. In Scouting, we believe that young people develop most when they are 'learning by doing,' when they are given responsibility, work in teams, take acceptable risks and think for themselves.

About Us
Doghouse ESU follow one of the most important ethics of Scout by following the principle of “learning by doing” by running our Unit programme in the great outdoors and encouraging the Explorer Scouts to plan and run their own activities. We achieve this goal by focusing on running activities in a mountain environment and specialising as a Mountain Activity Unit. This means all our Explorer Scouts need to take responsibility, work in teams, take acceptable risks and think for themselves. Whilst risk in adventurous activities cannot be totally removed it can be minimised and we achieve this by having fully qualified leaders with national governing body qualifications. We don’t meet in a building weekly like a traditional Scout Group we meet remotely on the internet planning and organising events remotely. Then we meet and GO!!! Is it secure? YES!

Why do we meet like this? Simple it offers the most flexible way for 14 – 18 year olds to meet. It…
• Removes the need to meet in a stuffy old building
• Allows us to run a more adventurous and challenging programme
• Removes pressure from the Explorer Scouts to meet weekly
• Frees up more time for them to focus on their studies
• Allows a fully flexible programme to fit around studies and exams
• Removes transport issues (travelling to and from weekly meetings)
• Allows open access to the Unit no matter where you are in the world
• Ensures more Scouting hours per month in contrast to meeting weekly
• It appeals to a more “IT savvy” generation
• Reduces overheads and running costs
Costs
Whilst Scouting is run entirely by volunteers giving their own personal time free of charge the rest of the world still revolves around cash which means Scouting itself unfortunately is not free of charge.

The current cost to be a member of Doghouse Explorer Scout Unit is £20 per school term. This covers…
• Unit overheads
• Helps to cover the cost to purchase new or maintain old equipment
• Subsidises some Unit activities
• Pays for membership to the Scout Association
• Pay for insurance with the Scout Association

What is DOES NOT cover is…
• The full cost of taking part in some individual activities e.g. camps

How to pay is simple, we accept…
• Cash
• Cheque
• PayPal (coming soon)

This is collected at the start of each school term.
